This Saturday, June 30, from 8 a.m. until 6 p.m., the Rockaway Fisheads Rugby Club will be hosting their 42nd Annual Rugby Championship in nearby Fort Tilden. There will be 30 Mens’ teams, 12 Womens’ and nine High School teams competing for trophies and bragging right in this Empire GU Summer 7's Classic. Teams in the Empire GU series will be fighting for points in the highly competitive summer competition among Northeast teams.
Patrick Steffens, 7's Chairman along with Louis Maiocco, Assistant Chairperson will organize the event for the Fisheads, taking over for John McCann who chaired the event since 1996 (22 years). Grouch McCann will continue helping with tournament details and will be assisted by longtime committee members Tim Kelly, Tippy Tipaldo, Ooch Boyland, Kermit Egan and Rat McGowan.
There will be more than 50 teams competing in various divisions using four fields. Finals are scheduled for 4 p.m. Note to teams: Bring plenty of water, bug spray, a bathing suit and a pop-up tent.

Rockaway Little League will be opening their RLL concession stand for the visiting ruggers, fans and guests. Thank you, Marty Andressen and Jack Bender for providing this food and beverage service.
The rugby field has been enlarged by 15 meters and with the addition new goalposts, more soil and 1000 pounds of grass seeds the field is ready for some rugby 7's action. Thanks to the National Park Service, SFDS CYO Soccer, Williams Company and Kiska Construction for the assistance with field renovation.
Following the rugby tournament, the Fisheads are asking all ruggers, fans and supporters to join them on a local bar crawl to support their team sponsors.
