Attention, Lifeguards! Need some help paying for college? Apply for the Steve Belson Memorial Lifeguard Scholarship.
Steve Belson, worked as a lifeguard for 10 years before becoming an FDNY firefighter. On September 11, 2001, Belson made the ultimate sacrifice while trying to save others in the World Trade Center. Every year, Rockaway remembers him with the Steve Belson Memorial Ocean Swim and Music Festival, where college incentive awards of $1,000 are given to lifeguards that apply for the scholarship. Applications are now being accepted through August 1. It is open to all lifeguards that work in Rockaway and are attending college. The application can be found on PAGE 36. Fill out the application and write a brief essay explaining why you deserve the scholarship, and mail it to The Steve Belson Memorial Scholarship Fund, c/o Sean R. Kellar, 522 Beach 140th Street, Belle Harbor, NY 11694.
The 17th Annual Steve Belson Memorial Ocean Swim will be held at 10 a.m. on August 4 at Beach 92nd Street—Bells Beach, where the winners of the scholarship will be announced, Belson will be remembered, and all are welcome to join in a half-mile ocean swim. A music festival usually follows on the evening of the ocean swim, but this year, it will be held on September 28 at a yet-to-be-determined Rockaway location.
