Erosion Evidence

This photo by John Reinhardt in Belle Harbor is a clear example of how our beaches are under duress. The Army Corps plan calls for a series of jetties from Beach 90th Street to Beach 121st. Further uptown, residents are concerned they will be less protected. An Army Corps spokesman said: “The groins are only to mitigate the erosion hot spots that are identified in the computer erosion modeling. The groins do not continue into the 140s because they are considered not necessary or useful. The footprint of the dune counts too. Remember, the Federal government is doing this for storm damage protection, not blanket space for recreation.”

The Army Corps released its revised study last week. As a reminder, public comments are being accepted through October 22. The report is available on the Army Corps New York District’s web site.
