In the November 15 issue of The Rockaway Times, we ran a feel-good story about FDNY Boxing, the Graybeards, Rockaway WISH and contractor Eric Jahrnes of Final Homes Contracting coming together to provide a new bathroom to a disabled Vietnam veteran.
The vet, who chose to remain anonymous, had had a stroke that left him wheelchair-bound. Since moving to a Dayton Towers East building about a year and a half ago, the veteran couldn’t use the bathroom or bathtub in his apartment and resorted to using the showers at the YMCA a few blocks away. When Bobby McGuire of FDNY Boxing found out about his story at the Thrilla in Camillia event, which raises funds for Building Homes for Heroes, a nonprofit that provides smart homes for Afghanistan and Iraq veterans, he was determined to help the Vietnam veteran get a new bathroom that he could use in his home.
The Graybeards and Rockaway WISH pitched in some money towards the renovation and Final Home Renovations took care of the work. They removed the tub and instead installed a walk-in shower with grab bars, plus a handicap-accessible sink, and they expanded the doorway from 24” to 32,” so the veteran can have better access to his newly renovated bathroom. Here you can see a before and after of the completed job by Final Home Renovations. Great job by all involved!BLOG COMMENTS POWERED BY DISQUS
