PSEG Long Island is more than just a utility company. Employee volunteers Patricia Miles of Valley Stream, and Christine Orgera of Howard Beach recently became “book fairies” when they visited PS 253 in Far Rockaway. Miles and Orgera helped to distribute an assortment of books to students, thanks to The Book Fairies program, a not-for-profit organization that builds literacy in high-need areas where students don’t have regular access to books to read.
Based in Freeport, The Book Fairies collects and distributes reading materials for children of all ages throughout the metropolitan area. Providing kids with new and gently used books fosters literacy and academic success.
“It was such a pleasure seeing how much the teachers and students appreciated the gift of these wonderful books,” Miles said. “I loved reading as a child, so being able to assist this organization in fostering that joy in a new generation of kids is very rewarding.”
