For years, this band of merry men, some gray, others bald, are a true testament to what makes Rockaway strong — the passion to keep locals, locally great and resilient.

The theme of this year’s event is Recognizing Excellence in Community Volunteerism. Honorees at this event include Friends of Tribute Park, which will receive the Tom Ryan Memorial Award for creating the scenic and quiet spot for visitors and community members alike to solemnly give respect to those who died on September 11. Also, there is the Don D.H. Hart Memorial Award, commemorating the achievements of Edward K. Valentine, a Breezy Point-bred native, who is celebrating 40 years of service in the Rockaway Point Volunteer Fire Department (RPVFD). Valentine, the longest running consecutive chief in the department’s history, spent time at Ground Zero during the recovery efforts and was also on the scene during the plane crash of flight 587 in Belle Harbor in 2001.
