Oh Snap! The Rockaway Times Photo Contest Is Open!

Hit us with your best shots (again)! The Fourth Annual Rockaway Times Photo Contest is now underway. There’s no doubt, we have some talented area photographers.  But the contest reveals the best of the best and you don’t have to be a professional to win the top prize of $500.

Last year’s winner, Don Riepe, snapped a gorgeous shot of a pair of swans at sunset in Jamaica Bay near Broad Channel. It was chosen as the number one photo out of more than a thousand entries last year. Along with the crown and bragging rights, Riepe received $500 and his photo made the front cover of The Rockaway Times last summer.

Riepe’s photo was among a top 30 that were blown up to poster-sized masterpieces and displayed on the boardwalk from Beach 19th through Riis Park, in Broad Channel and near the ferry landing, making for an outdoor photography museum that all could enjoy. The contest has been such a success that it’s only right that we keep it going and aiming for bigger and better and once again, local activist John Cori will be the mastermind behind it all. Plus, co-sponsors like the NYC Parks Department, the Jamaica Bay – Rockaway Parks Conservancy (JBRPC),  NYCFerry, and the Rockaway Artists Alliance (RAA) will also be helping to make the contest another big hit.

This year, we’re starting the contest a week early to give people more time to gather their best shots. We just ask that everyone follows the rules!

There are five categories, but they’re a bit different from last year, so pay close attention! 1) Parade Pics (This means local parades like Poseidon’s, Rockaway St. Paddy’s Day and even your Memorial Day parade pics); 2) Humor/ Fun (Got a silly shot from around town that may spark a giggle, we’d love to see them!) 3) Rainbows/ Lightning (Rainbows seem to be getting even bigger than sunsets, so we’d love to see your best rainbow or lightning photos); 4) Pets/Animals (Always a popular subject, show us your furry friends or those from around town, or even animals more on the wild side like your seals and whales; and 5) Beach Life (Show what it truly means to live by the beach. This includes your sunsets/ sunrises or that great Rockaway photo that you’re not sure what category if fits into, but looks like a winner).

All photos must be submitted to the special contest email: This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.. This means, don’t send them to other Rockaway Times emails, as we don’t want to miss it or confuse it with Local Color photos. When sending photos, please specify which category you are submitting for.

Please, please keep in mind: you are limited to TWO (2) photos per category, so only send the ones you think will compete for top honors. This means 10 photos total. Photos should be high-resolution, otherwise they will not look good when enlarged for boardwalk viewing. (Or you must be able to get us a high-res version if your photo is selected).

Note that The Rockaway Times assumes the right to use any photo contest entries as they see fit. Mostly this means your photo may also have a chance to be in the paper or even grace the cover of The Rockaway Times’ Summer Guide. Photo credit will be given, but no other compensation will be offered. Photos that are submitted to Local Color can also be submitted into the contest.

The deadline for this year’s contest is Friday, April 12, so get snapping! Remember, you’re entering to win $500 and a front-page spotlight! More details about judging and displaying the photos will be announced after the contest comes to a close.
