Rockaway Memorial Day Parade on Monday

While we celebrate with the beach, concession crawls and barbecues on this unofficial start to summer, let’s not forget the true meaning of this three-day weekend. Memorial Day is Monday, May 27 and in true Rockaway fashion, locals will recognize those who made the supreme sacrifice for this country.
On Monday, May 27, the American Legion Daniel M. O’Connell Post #272 Memorial Day Parade will take place in Rockaway. The event will start with a memorial Mass at St. Francis de Sales on Beach 129th Street at 10:30 a.m. Following the service, there will be a ceremony at the Four Chaplains monument outside of the church. The parade will then head down Rockaway Beach Boulevard to Beach 121st Street for a ceremony at the Jewish War Veterans Memorial Circle. All veterans, whether a member or not of the American Legion or any other veteran organization, are invited to march. And all residents are encouraged to line the streets and show their support.
For the first time, the parade will end at Memorial Circle. However, half an hour later, all are welcome to attend the concluding ceremony at the Doughboy and Doughgirl monuments on Beach 94th Street. The Knights of Columbus (333 Beach 90th Street) will host an event with refreshments and hot dogs.
