Far Rockaway is getting a new playground in under six hours. On Thursday, May 30, a group of volunteers from The Child Center of NY, the Workforce Housing Group and the New York Mets Foundation are joining forces with KaBOOM! to bring a new place for kids to play in Far Rockaway. KaBOOM!, a national non-profit dedicated to building playgrounds for all kids, particularly those growing up in poverty in America, has set its eyes on Far Rockaway and on May 30, a new playground will arise at the Dix Avenue Apartments.
This project has been a group effort from the start, when back in March, kids from the community were welcome to draw their dream playground. On Thursday, those dreams will come true as the Dix Avenue Apartments Playground, based off of their designs, will be built by 200 volunteers. It will be a safe, state-of-the-art playground for kids to enjoy for years to come.
“What could possibly be more uplifting to the young people in a community than to have a playground built for them?” asked Deepmalya Ghosh, The Child Center’s Senior Vice President of External Affairs and Community Engagement, who, according to a press release, was instrumental in getting the project off the ground. “The kids in Far Rockaway are in need of quality places to play, and we’re grateful to the Mets Foundation, KaBOOM!, and the Workforce Housing Group, as well as the NYPD 101st Precinct, Denean Ferguson, and Council Member Donovan Richards for their support in bringing this home.”
While the main build will take place just over the course of six hours on Thursday, with an official ribbon-cutting ceremony expected at around 2:30 p.m., the project got a kickstart with the help of other community members, including some of the staff from nearby St. John’s Episcopal Hospital. A team of nearly 30 people helped prep the park on Tuesday, May 28, so that the group of about 200 volunteers can have a safe and easy time putting in the finishing touches on Thursday.
Last-minute volunteers are still welcome to join in the build on Thursday at 22-45 Dix Avenue in Far Rockaway. For more info, check out dix-avenue.eventbrite.com. Those who just want to watch the work take place and support the volunteers are also encouraged to join. The build day, which kicks off at 9 a.m., will include family-friendly activities, DJ music, grilling by Rock Safe Streets, and the official ribbon-cutting at around 2:30 p.m., which will be attended by the Mets organization and others.BLOG COMMENTS POWERED BY DISQUS
