State Senator Joe Addabbo, Jr. will be co-hosting his fifth and final free rain barrel giveaway of the year, this time partnering again with Assemblywoman Stacey Pheffer Amato and the New York City Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) in Rockaway Park.

On Saturday, July 20, the DEP, Addabbo’s office, and Pheffer Amato’s office will be at the St. Camillus Church, located at 99-15 Rockaway Beach Boulevard, between 10 a.m. and 12 p.m. giving away free 55-gallon rain barrels to those who register. After 12 p.m., any remaining barrels will be distributed to the public on a first-come first-serve basis.

Rain barrels are useful devices that can be connected to a home’s gutter system to collect excess rainwater. Homeowners can then use that collected water instead of water from their home’s tap that can be used for simple household tasks.

“By using these free rain barrels, residents can store excess rainwater and use it at a later time to do chores around the house, such as washing the car, cleaning the outside of the house, or watering plants,” Addabbo, a member of the Senate Environmental Conservation Committee, said. “The benefits of this are twofold. With a rain barrel, people can save money on their water bills, as well as conserving water for the environment. I would like to thank Assemblywoman Pheffer Amato and the NYC DEP for yet again partnering to bring this great giveaway to Rockaway Park.”

“Rain barrels are one of those amazing free resources you don't want to miss out on,” said Pheffer Amato.
