As the waves rhythmically pound the shore, feet will hit the boardwalk and sand to the rhythm of a beat. Beach Sessions is back. But this time around, YOU will be the one performing. The annual beach dance performance series is now putting the spotlight on the public by offering dance lessons so everyone can join in.
For the past four summers, Beach Sessions has wowed many on the beach with professionally choreographed dance performances. Now this time, they’re giving others the chance to do more than just watch. From Monday, August 19 through Thursday, August 22, Beach Sessions is offering daily dance classes of diverse styles, open to the public and taught by new artists who have a teaching practice and artists that have previously presented at Beach Sessions. The classes are open to all ages and all experience levels, so don’t be shy, you’ll be in good company. The teachers include Loni Landon, Cori Kresge, Karma Stylz, Ephrat Asherie, Omri Drumlevich, Dance Church and Biba Bell. All classes will be held at the Beach 97th Concession.
On Monday, August 19 at 11 a.m., Loni Landon will lead a class that produces visceral movement, challenging the body to push for new ideas in both mental and physical approaches, so get ready for some dance improv. At 12:30 p.m., Ephrat Asherie teaches a lesson in house dance. On Tuesday, August 20, at 11 a.m., Omri Drumlevich leads a Gaga/People class, which offers a framework for users to connect to their bodies and imaginations, experience physical sensations, improve their flexibility and stamina, exercise their agility and explosive power, and enjoy the pleasure of movement in a welcoming, accepting atmosphere. Following at 12:30 p.m., get ready to sweat with a fitness dance class led by Dance Church. On Wednesday, August 21, at 11 a.m., Cori Krege leads an Accessing Zero class which will playfully incorporate ancient Buddhist wisdom, Zero Balancing energy work, ecstatic dance, and meditative stillness, in search for the tangible meaning of Zero. Following at 12:30 p.m., will be Karma Stylz teaching the essentials of Voguing. On the last day, Thursday, August 22, at 11 a.m., Biba Bell brings Inner Surf Outer Turf, a physically experimental class that will transform in the movement across surfaces, textures, bodies, and beach zones. Expect to get sweaty, sandy and salty in this final class of the series.
