Melissa Churns Up Sweet Swell

Last week’s waves were not for the faint of heart. As nor’easter-turned-subtropical storm Melissa churned way off the coast of the mid-Atlantic and northeast, she provided what some called an unprecedented swell for Rockaway, making for some of the best waves seen in years.

With swell predictions over six feet, few were brave enough to take on the first of the powerful waves that churned up on Thursday, October 10. Some who did take on the challenge wound up learning a tough lesson from Mother Nature. There were plenty of wipeouts and it was reported that a local surf shop that rents boards, saw more than 10 broken in the big surf. However, as the weekend went on and conditions calmed down, making for more ideal October surf that locals dream of, surfers showed up in full force to enjoy the action.
