Honoring Our Veterans This Monday

On Monday, November 11, we honor those military members who served our country. There are a few events taking place to honor our veterans locally in honor of the day.

There are no local parades, but you can head to Manhattan for the city parade, which kicks off at noon from 26th to 46th Street along 5th Avenue. There is an opening ceremony at 11 a.m. at Madison Square Park and a wreath-laying at the Eternal Light Flagstaff Monument just before noon.

Locally, the American Legion Daniel M. O’Connell Post #272 will hold a small ceremony at the Doughboy and GI Jane statues on Beach 95th and Rockaway Beach Boulevard, which includes a prayer service and a wreath-laying at the monuments. The ceremony will begin at 11 a.m.

Also on Saturday, November 9, the VFW Post 260 in Broad Channel is hosting an all-day celebration for the 100th anniversary of the Post serving our nation’s veterans. There will be events taking place all day, from a prayer service at 9 a.m., to fun for the kids starting at noon, to a buffet dinner at 4 p.m., followed by a concert of local musicians starting at 8 p.m. at 713 Shad Creek Road.
