Cheese, Louise –it’s that time again – so hit us with your best shots (again)! The Fifth Annual Rockaway Times Photo Contest is now underway. There’s no doubt, Rockaway’s Got Talent and we like to put the spotlight on peninsula shutterbugs. The Top 30 photos are made poster-size and put on display on the boardwalk and other prominent locations. And the photographer who submits the winning pic, chosen in the summer, wins $500. And Rockaway bragging rights.

You don’t have to be a professional, you just have to take a great photo! Last year’s winner Emily McNeil snapped a great photo of kids looking through boardwalk telescopes, on her phone.

Ok, now the IMPORTANT STUFF:  Deadline: Saturday, April 11 at noon.

The photo(s) has to be hi-resolution (we must be able to enlarge it for the posters). Please don’t send anything other than high quality pics. There are FIVE categories. You can send two for each but no more!

The categories for the 2020 RT Photo Contest are: 1) Boardwalk Life; 2) In the Water (swimming, surfing, paddleboard, boating, etc.); 3) Humor/Fun; 4) Pets/Animals; 5) Rockaway Life – that great photo that simply captures Rockaway.

Also important: Contest entries MUST be emailed to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.. Include your name or name of the photographer and the category you wish to enter the photo in.

Before you submit, please know that The Rockaway Times may use any of the photos as we see fit (in the paper, and/or Summer Guide, Facebook, etc). We will give photo credit, but we will have full rights to the photo.

Many readers submit photos for our weekly feature, Local Color. Those photos can be sent to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.  but please! Don’t send contest photos to that email. Send entries to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.  And thanks!!

The contest is also sponsored by the Jamaica Bay–Rockaway Parks Conservancy and the NYC Parks Department. John Cori is a contest organizer and additional sponsors may join.
