All that is left is the official announcement. The Project Partnership Agreement for the Rockaway and Jamaica Bay Reformulation Project was signed by Colonel Thomas D. Asbery.
The Army Corps of Engineers (ACOE) will soon put out bids and is expecting to award a groin/jetty contract in late April. The winning contractor will have to submit plans and schedules and also work around the piping plover restrictions. For engineering purposes, the Army Corps prefers to start at Beach 149th Street and build east. Work could begin as early as late May.
A total of nineteen groins (both new and reinforced) will be installed. Each groin can take 2-3 months to complete; therefore, the reformulation project will take several years to complete. Officials have said that beach area closures would be relatively small and temporary.
Sand replenishment is part of the plan and that is expected to occur in late 2021 (subject to possible severe storms and groin construction progress).
Stay tuned for official announcement, construction schedules and other matters.BLOG COMMENTS POWERED BY DISQUS
