We understand the need for social distancing, but at the expense of beach protection?
NYC Parks has been hard at work enforcing social distancing on crowded beaches this summer, but in some areas, beachgoers are taking it to extremes by setting up camp for the day on the reinforced dunes, meant to protect the community from potential flooding.
A few readers, including one who spent their time volunteering to plant the dunes in years past, brought this to our attention. After the dunes were formed following Hurricane Sandy, volunteers planted the dunes to grow roots that would make the dunes stronger. Beachgoers are now using these areas to get away from the crowds but as a result, are causing damage to the plantings.
What happened to the fencing that used to protect these dunes? Where is the enforcement? NYC Parks?
