Quick action was taken to mitigate an oil spill in Jamaica Bay last weekend.
On Sunday, August 16, a fuel odor filled the air and an oil slick was spotted in the bay near West 14th Road in Broad Channel. The oil came from a home that was under construction on Crossbay Boulevard. The owner of the home had emptied an oil tank into the ground, which then ran into the bay.
The NYS Department of Environmental Conservation was notified, which sent a response team to survey the scene. An environmental firm was hired to place a boom and conduct the cleanup. The owner of the home will be responsible for the costs of the cleanup.BLOG COMMENTS POWERED BY DISQUS
