Support on the Sea for Essential Workers

On Saturday, August 22, a few local surfers took to the sea to thank our NYPD and the many essential workers who have carried us through the coronavirus crisis.

A small group gathered on Beach 108th Street for a paddle out to show the NYPD and other essential workers that Rockaway has their back.

Rockaway resident and surfer Chris Sheridan helped to organize the event to “show the police, fire department, sanitation workers, teachers, healthcare workers, everyone that’s been getting beat up since Covid came in that we’re thankful for them, but especially the police.” Sheridan explained the main focus was police because, “They’ve been getting chewed up and it’s just not right and I want to make them aware that people in Rockaway care about them.”

With a modest group of about 15 participants from young to old, Sheridan said, “I was hoping for a better turnout, but it is what it is.”

United, on surfboard and paddleboards, the group paddled out into the ocean and formed a circle in a show of support for local heroes.
