On Sunday, September 27, 18 volunteers participated in a coastal cleanup in honor of International Coastal Cleanup Month and the end of Climate Week 2020. The event was sponsored by local grassroots group Rockaway Revolution and NYC Council Candidate for District 32, Felicia Singh.
The volunteers began at Beach 120th Street and made their way down to Beach 95th Street, filling 20 large trash bags with debris.
"It’s wonderful to see how many Rockaway residents came out to keep our beach beautiful,” Singh said. “It’s our civic duty to make sure our community is resilient and we can all participate, whether it’s by doing a coastal clean-up, advocating for storm protection, or teaching our students how to compost and manage hydroponic gardens.”
Singh also noted that an integrated and sustainable plan is needed to ensure the Rockaways are resilient for years to come: “Tide gates, sea walls, pumping, and raising streets are not separate solutions. We need multifaceted plans that are created in partnership with community members, local organizations, and elected officials so these structural changes adequately meet the challenges we face.”BLOG COMMENTS POWERED BY DISQUS
