It wasn’t the eggnog that made you do a double take at the sea of Santas running down Shore Front last weekend. It was Rockapulco Run’s Annual Santa Shuffle 5K!
On Saturday, December 19, after organizer John Edwards shouted “go” and started the clock, the Santas took off with merry and bright faces as they raced down Shore Front Parkway for the 3.1-mile trek. This year’s run was dedicated to local resident Cristin Mullen, who died unexpectedly at age 35 on Thursday, December 17. Mullen was an avid runner who participated in several Rockapulco Run events in the past, including the Santa Shuffle.
Plans shifted for the event but the Santas were ready for anything. Originally planned for Rogers, the headquarters for suit and number pick-up was switched to The Rockaway Hotel and the race began on the road on Beach 108th Street rather than the usual boardwalk, as it had not been cleared of snow from Wednesday’s storm.
While the race usually draws hundreds, coronavirus kept it smaller with about 60 suited and masked-up Santas this year. Participants could walk or run but the two first runners were given a special prize pack. However, everyone, no matter what place they came in, was given cookies to bring home at the end of their trek.
