A Sad Winter Tail

On the evening of Saturday, January 30, a bottlenose dolphin washed up dead on Beach 123rd Street.

Small crowds gathered on the chilly night to get a glimpse of the creature after an alert went off on Citizen App saying a whale or shark has washed up on the beach. Police also responded to the scene.

The more than six-foot dolphin rolled around in the tide as people used flashlights to observe it.

As we go to press, it is not clear if the dolphin’s body was removed or swept back out into the water. There were no further reports of sightings in the following days.
