On Wednesday, June 1, at the annual FDNY medal ceremony at City Hall, local firefighter Captain Peter E. Hayden of Division 13, Ladder Company 137, was awarded the Chief Wesley Williams Medal. Hayden, who comes from a family of firefighters, was awarded for his actions that saved the life of a three-year-old girl from a big fire at a two-story home on Beach 86th Street on January 30, 2021.
Upon entering the second floor of the engulfed home and faced with poor visibility and worsening heat, Hayden found the unconscious child, scooped her up, and brought her out to safety, transferring her to Firefighter Joseph Durkin of Engine 268 to continue care. Hayden then re-entered the home to search for anymore victims inside. His quick actions ultimately saved the life of the little girl. Hayden has been on the job since 2003.BLOG COMMENTS POWERED BY DISQUS
