The 14th edition of the Graybeards Family Run once again defied dire early weather predictions producing a fabulous night that saw a new high for registered runners with 500+ participating in at least one race. Spectators more than doubled race attendance, cheering the runners of all ages from 1-86, and then convening in the Fr. Grogan Memorial Schoolyard at St. Francis de Sales, to celebrate with food and beverages, music from Gearth, Wind & Firemen, games and children’s rides, raffles and awards.
The children’s races kicked things off at 6:30 with waves of runners pouring down Rockaway Beach Blvd to receive their ribbons after completing their trek. Rockaway’s Special Athletes followed, drawing a tremendous response from the crowd. The 1 Mile set off at 7:00 and Kyle Cornish took the trophy in a blistering 5:19. Sean Mulvihill, Terence Marten, Ian Byrne, and Joseph Butler completed the top 5. Annie McManus was female champion in 6:20 followed by Chloe Murphy, Kathleen Walker, Kelly Erhard, and Kaitlin Potter.
With the boardwalk once again open for the first time since Sandy, the main event returned to a 5K distance. Alex Goldberg led a coterie of Archbishop Molloy veterans to take the 5k championship in 17:41, wresting the title from his brother Patrick, who finished 3rd. Fred Murgida was 2nd, Kieran Rock 4th, and Ronald Joseph 5th. Jackie Thompson of Notre Dame Academy won the female plate in 21:57. Caroline Gifford was 2nd, Olivia Murray 3rd, Brigit Butler 4th and Siobhan Fitzgerald 5th. Tom Patchett finished 6th, and posted the best combined time in the Family Run, the Kevin Kearney Rockapulco Run, and the BCAC Shamrock Shuffle/Dawn’s Fun Run, to capture the Rockaway Triple Crown. Caroline Gifford retained the crown on the female side. In addition to their crown, each received a $500 prize courtesy of Assemblyman Phil Goldfeder and Councilman Eric Ulrich. Goldfeder was in contention for the crown but Patchett was too strong. To retain her amateur status, Gifford donated her prize.
