Free RB Jazz Festival At Low Tide
The cats will be out and it’s gonna be cool. And you’re gonna dig it, daddy-o.
That’s if you make it to the 3rd Annual Rockaway Beach Jazz Festival at the Low Tide Bar at the Beach 97th Street concessions on Saturday, September 3. It’s from 6 to 10 p.m., for all ages and all free.
This year’s fest will offer “some great bands and players from New York and beyond, including– the Ancient Jazz Quartet; the collective trio 718 from Brooklyn; and finally the raga inspired pianist Richard Bennett’s Quintet,” says Tim Otto founder/musician/organizer.
While Otto looks forward he can’t help but look back a little. “The first festival was in 2014 at the Rockaway Beach Surf Club. I'd been doing regular jazz nights there and they were a big hit. There wasn't much, if any jazz happening around the immediate neighborhood. So I thought it'd be great to bring out some more of the many great musicians and bands I know and have played with…and start a small festival.
“The audience response has been awesome - crowds love listening to great music and great players, whatever the genre, and at the time, I felt that it was a good time to put Rockaway on the jazz map!”
The Rockaway music scene has really expanded over the past two years or so, Otto reflects. “I think all the eating establishments have a lot to do with it. And there's obviously just a lot more people out there now, now that Rockaway is so "hip and trendy'.”
The RB Jazz Festival just makes sense. “So there's places that want live music to draw in a crowd, and enough people to support gigs and working musicians. There's a lot more venues to play at - all three boardwalk concessions, various restaurants, of course not forgetting all the local bars that have had music for years, plus art openings, parties, etc. I only see it getting better!”BLOG COMMENTS POWERED BY DISQUS
