City Councilman Donovan Richards and the City were moving towards Eminent Domain to solve the long problem of the Far Rockaway Shopping Center before the death of property owner Rita Stark.  Such a move tends to get neglectful landlords to pay attention.  The theater on Beach 116th Street and the string of stores that used to include the Sand Bar are properties that weigh on new developments and businesses on that street.  City Councilman Eric Ulrich might start urging the City to go after the landlords of the theater and Sand Bar for “the public good.” The de Blasio administration is not averse to Eminent Domain as they also went after Coney Island properties in 2015.

NYC Parks is asking for comments / suggestions about what to do with a one hundred million or so of extra FEMA money.  Our two cents: add bike ramps on the street side of the concessions.  As of now, bike riders are supposed to dismount because (poor planning!) there is a bottleneck at each concession. With all this loot they can come up with a design that allows bike riders to keep riding while navigating their way through the concession areas.  (We’d prefer they do it on the beach side by widening the boardwalk but that involves permits and all that nonsense).

That was our two cents worth.  But we have another penny of a thought.  Some money could be used for an iconic structure – something that makes people know it’s Rockaway.  We keep pushing this one because we know some day somebody will listen!  A forty foot high lifeguard chair or surfboard.  A lighthouse.  Maybe Whaleamena.

Easy for us to say, we didn’t dare go in. Mild weather on New Year’s Day made brave souls out of hundreds of people who jumped in the ocean to celebrate the start of 2017. Some photos of the fun are on Page 32.

Maybe this is said every year but we’re saying it again: everybody’s sick!  Head colds and coughs are rampant and the most common: feeling like crap – is affecting you or someone in your family.  As for you snowbirds reading this, don’t be too gleeful, karma’s a bitch.

A report in The Daily News says that 40 percent of homes in the unmitigated disaster that is Build It Back are still not repaired.  Are the de Blasio people still blaming it on Bloomberg?

Congrats to Chris Livingston who won four tickets to the St. John’s – DePaul game on January 16.   We’ve got a few more sets of tickets to give away. If you’ve sent in your name it’s in the hat for our next drawing.

Firefighter and amazing photographer Peter Brady who has landed more photos on our front page than anyone not on staff is a dad for the third time.  He and wife, Kerry, who did all the hard work, welcomed Jack William Brady to the world on Monday, January 2.  That’s some Happy New Year’s news!

The next Community Board 14 meeting is Tuesday, January 10 at the Knights of Columbus on Beach 90th Street.
