Former Queens Borough President Helen Marshall died last week at the age of 87. One of her initiatives that never quite made – and we wish it had -- was the goal of CUNY by the Sea. In 2007, the former BP announced in a State of the Borough address that almost $7 million was going to transform the courthouse at Beach 90th and Beach Channel Drive into a CUNY annex. What happened? The usual suspect: budget cuts.

Rock-a-Pup, the pet store on Beach 116th Street is closing its doors for good. Lisa Long gave it a shot but found that she couldn’t quite beat the trend for shoppers to get stuff online or at the big retail stores. Bummer. Fortunately, Mazzone’s (the new hardware store) and One-on-One Physical therapy are places that will be opening soon on 116th, which is plagued by too many vacancies.

The Mary Louis Academy varsity basketball team beat traditional powerhouse Christ the King this week.  Locals Courtney McCool and Carly McCann rep Rockaway on the team that will next play Scanlon in the State tournament.  Way to go, girls!

What did you give up for Lent? Councilman Eric Ulrich has decided to give up shaving. But it’s all for a good cause. For 40 days, Ulrich is giving up shaving his beard as he raises awareness and money for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and childhood cancer. He has set out with a goal of $2,000 and already raised close to $400 within 24 hours of kicking off his campaign. You can donate to http://fundraising.stjude.org/site/TR?fr_id=74650&pg=entry

For those who were looking forward to booing Mayor de Blasio, or maybe even thanking him for the expected ferry comeback, he was MIA at this year’s St. Patrick’s Day Parade. He was down at an event in Florida. With chilly temps and high-wind, it seemed like he had the right idea. Several other expected groups skipped out on the parade as well.
