The ferry is starting May 1, a good six weeks earlier than expected.  Although many advocates deserve some measure of credit for getting the service, no one,  was more of a driving force than Joe Hartigan, aka The Ferry Guy. He was pushing for ferry service years before the City implemented the ferry after Sandy.  Bravo to Joe!

Careful how you read.  In last week’s Ask The Doc column regarding concussions, the second sentence read: Physicians have been advising both rest at home and avoidance of classwork for many years.  Our eyes jumped right to that.  Avoid homework?  Why didn’t we have that kind of doctor growing up?  We neglected to see the first sentence about concussions and the conventional treatment that follows.

Speaking of being careful, the new hardware store coming to Beach 116th Street, Mazzone Ace Hardware, is pronounced with a hard E. As in Mah-zone-eee, in case you want to get it right. But we're sure some will still call in Browns.

For the third year in a row, The Rockaway Times has been honored at the New York Press Association’s Better Newspaper convention. This year, we took Second Place in Overall Best Use of Social Media. And that was before our Facebook whale video drew more than a half million views last week. Big shout out to Facebook Queen Katie McFadden who really earned us the honor.  Which reminds us, please like us on Facebook and follow us on Instagram and sign up for our email.  Maybe we’ll up our game and start caring about Twitter.

A house on the corner of Beach 92nd Street and Holland Avenue was long vacant and many people had envisioned it as a bed and breakfast.  We don’t what the plans are for it but it was recently bought by an outfit going by the name Some Indian Guy LLC.

Longtime newspaper editor Howard Schwach has written a novel about the crash of Flight 587. It’s an alternative take on the official findings with a cops vs terrorist angle.  The book, Flight 587 Down, is available on E-publishing platforms such as Amazon and IBooks.

Our friend Bob Hardt caught this wide discrepancy and tweeted it on Tuesday: New York City weather fun facts. Current temperature in Chelsea: 78 degrees. Rockaway Beach: 58 degrees.  (A 20 degree difference is about as wide as we’ve heard).
