Talk of the town and going like hot cakes.  Our Summer Guide, which honestly, our staff worked tirelessly on, was met with great reviews.  (We know it’s good when advertisers who weren’t in tell us they wish they were!).  Many of the advertisers who made sure to get in (see Page 35) will have spare copies. We’ll also be refilling the news rack at the ferry on a regular basis, if you’re looking for a copy.  It’s a keeper!

The Rockaway Times can’t rest because the Summer Guide is out. The Photo Contest is underway.  Did you see the fab photos on the boardwalk or at Riis?  Yes, those poster-sized photos on the boardwalk railing (at Beach 17th Street they’re on wooden posts) are finalists in The Rockaway Times Photo Contest.

Speaking of the contest… there will be Round 2 at which the Top 30 get whittled down to a Top 10.  This round of judging will be done by the public.  The public judging lines up like this: voting will take place on Sunday, June 11 at 11 a.m. at Beach 17th Street and later the same day at 2 p.m. at Beach 116th Street. The following Saturday (June 17) voting will take place at 10 a.m. at Beach 67th Street, noon at Beach 59th Street and 2 p.m. at Beach 98th Street. The third and final round will take place at Caracas (Beach 106th)  on Saturday, July 2 and a winner will be announced.  More details in future editions of The Rockaway Times.

The end of the contest only means we start preparing for The Rockaway Times Sand Castle contest which takes place in early August. We’re wondering about a new motto.  How ‘bout: The Rockaway Times: More Than a Newspaper!

Lost and found. An honest reader and good citizen, Arley Tapirian, contacted us about a ring she found at the Beach 67th Street train station.  She’s happy to return it to the rightful owner.  If you lost it and can describe it in detail please send Arley an email: This email address is being protected from spambots. Forgot sunscreen? Don't fret. Sunscreen dispensers have been placed along the boardwalk summer as part of a 2-year pilot program.  Many people wish these were there in the old days!

Rockaway has two new beer gardens, Liquid Bread (next to Community House on Beach 102nd Street) and Rockapulco at Beach 108th.  Both are great!  And both offer more than beer. Last weekend’s overcast was perfect for these casual, fun places.  We’re not sure if these places will compete but we know the winners are locals and visitors who now have two more great options on the social scene.
