There was a rumor that condos and maybe a hotel were going up on the bay at 87th Street (near the old Rosie’s bait shop and used tire place).  Turns out there is a Build It Back job going on, with permits for a house elevation. Nothing more according to the Buildings Department. We know the property changed hands after Sandy so we don’t know how it was eligible for Build it Back funding (let alone got Build It Back to start!).  We called Build It Back and seemed to have them stumped.  We’re waiting for an explanation.

We got a call from Geraldine Chapey telling us there’s a need for election inspectors for upcoming primary and Election Day. The pay is $200 for each day. You can call 718-634-9510 for more information.

There’s a lady, Katherine, who works for NYCFerry, doing a great job dealing with people on long (hopeless?) lines on weekends. She tells people if they’ll make it on the next one and/or if another one’s on the way. It makes a difference keeping people informed. This past Sunday we saw three boats usually used for fishing being used as extra ferry vessels.

South Nassau Communities Hospital in Oceanside (and an option for many in Rockaway) has entered negotiations with Mount Sinai and will explore a formal affiliation agreement between the 455-bed Oceanside hospital and the world-renowned Mount Sinai Health System.

Some are saying the paddle ballers on Shore Front may have a male model in their midst. GQ, the men’s fashion magazine, sent out a photographer to Rockaway Beach looking to find people with the “waviest style.” Not sure if we missed any other locals but we did spot Bill Swensen. You’re in GQ, Bill! That’s right up there with a mention in the High Tide column!

CityLimits.org reported that the City Planning Commission voted unanimously to approve the administration’s proposed rezoning of downtown Far Rockaway.  The City Council subcommittee on Zoning and Franchises, chaired by Councilman Donovan Richards, will host a hearing on the proposal on Thursday July 27, 9:30 a.m. at City Hall.

Get your buckets and shovels ready! The Rockaway Times Sandcastle Contest is Sunday, July 30 at noon on Beach 117th Street! There will be trophies for winners in three different age categories, from kids to adults, but we’re hoping for more incentives. If any local business or organization wants to donate a gift certificate or gift basket, contact This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..

Congrats to all who helped make the Thrilla In Camilla a great success.  The FDNY Bravest Boxing core squared off against fighters from the West Midland Fire Service from Birmingham, England. The FDNY came on top 5-2. The event raises money to benefit veterans and the Building Homes For Heroes, a non-profit organization that builds or modifies homes, and gifts them mortgage-free to injured veterans and their families. Bobby McGuire deserves a lot of credit for the event. It was such a fun night we demand that it become a tradition!

Want to Avoid The Day?  Well, there’s an escape available this Sunday from 12-6 p.m.  The first pop-up book store will appear at NurtureUWellness (165 Beach 116th Street, 2nd Fl.).  And there’ll be more than books. We hope plans for a permanent bookstore, bar, café and community space continue to move forward.
