We think it’s been both a farce and an outrage about how the Rockaway Courthouse has been allowed to sit there and further crumble since the City awarded the Harmony Group development rights for $50,000 in 2013.  But maybe it’s a tragedy, too. The building looks like a casualty of the long delay and our guess is that it will have to be torn down.

Speaking of the courthouse, the EDC objected to the fact that we quoted people who no longer work at EDC.  And they said they wanted to write a letter.  We said, sure.  But like the courthouse, the letter's been delayed.  Maybe next week.

Congratulations to all the volleyball champs. Thankfully, it was an overcast day and we didn’t have a repeat from a couple of years ago when lots of players suffered severe burns on their feet from the hot sand.

The City put the brakes on a bike ride-share program that was set to launch in Rockaway. The most surprising thing about the move is the speed at which the City sent out its cease and desist letter to the company and then a issued press release saying they’re interested in the new technology offered by the company, Spin, but permits and approvals are necessary. On the face that sounds reasonable. But we wonder about how the City will drag its feet behind the scenes. They’ve got to protect the monopoly called CitiBike, after all.

As of now it looks like there are two Democrats, Mike Scala and Helal Sheikh running for City Council District 32.  They’ll have a primary runoff on September 12 and then the winner challenges incumbent Eric Ulrich in November.
