Hey, advertisers. You know we have two news racks at the ferry dock, right? All those potential customers can see your ad when they pick up a free copy of The Rockaway Times. Now, we’re offering something new and exciting.  The Rockaway Times will handle your SOCIAL MEDIA.

We can do Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter – all those things you have no idea about – or are too busy to do (but you know you should be doing!)  Contact Katie or Pat for more details at 718-634-3030.  (And just so you know, The Rockaway Times won Second Place in Best Use of Social Media at the New York Press Association convention).

The summer often brings the most “awareness” of the sewage treatment plant at Beach 106th and Beach Channel Drive. To share your nasal experience you can call 311 or the Environmental Protection Agency at 718-595-7000 or City Councilman Donovan Richards who chairs the commission on Environmental Protection at 718-471-7014.

We featured local football star Ray Marten on our front page some time back when he signed with Boston College. In a game last Saturday on CBS-TV, Ray grabbed a catch for his first career touchdown. The announcer exclaimed, “First career touchdown for the sophomore from Belle Harbor, New York!”

The horrific rainfall and disaster in Houston reminds us how important volunteers are. In Rockaway, we are blessed to have many. In coming weeks, we’ll be doing profiles on some vital Rockaway organizations.

The human element that shines through was captured nicely by local resident Ann Kirby-Payne who said on Twitter: “A natural disaster should make you want to pull up stakes, but getting through it with your neighbors makes your roots grow stronger, deeper.”

Was it just us? It seemed like a weird summer. Not terrible weather. Not great. Gone in a flash.  Weird.

Just because we declared the summer was weird doesn’t mean it’s over. The Richie Allen Memorial Surf Classic is Sunday at Beach 91st and the Poseidon Parade is the following weekend, Saturday, September 16. Make the summer as endless as you can!

Michele Titus. Remember her? She’s a New York Assemblywoman representing Far Rockaway.  She’s so rarely seen we dubbed her Absent-Titus and she’s Exhibit A why term limits are needed on the state level. We figured she was too busy to pay much attention to her Far Rockaway constituents. But, according to a report in The Daily News, she’s not getting busy nearly enough and has sued the state because she and her husband stopped having sex after he was fired from his court officer job.

Great job by the local firefighters in rescuing people from a blaze on Beach 91st Street.  The family which has been displaced could use some help.  Please consider giving online at  www.gofundme.com/te4btq-house-fire-destroys-everything
