It’s that time of year. No Parking restrictions end this weekend – but not until Sunday morning 12:01 a.m., October 1. Make sure your cars are off the street on Saturday if these rules apply to your block.

From the MTA: The Marine Park Bridge, will be closed overnight on weekdays September 25 through October 25 in both directions. There will be no closures on Yom Kippur and Columbus Day, as well as weekends. During this time, all traffic will be detoured to the Cross Bay Veterans Memorial Bridge between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m., including the Q35 bus. The closures are necessary for upgrade work on the lift mechanism.

The Graybeards are holding their annual blood drive on Sunday, October 15 at the St. Francis de Sales gym on Beach 129th Street from 7:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m.

And that’s not the only thing happening at the St. Francis. Father Jim Cunningham let us know that St. Francis de Sales will be having The Blessing of Animals in honor of the Feast of St. Francis of Assisi on Thursday, October 5 at 4 p.m. in the Parish Prayer Garden. All pets, Catholic and Non-Catholic, are most welcome!

What a sorry saga. Antony Weiner was sentenced to 21 months in prison for sending obscene material to a minor. Weiner, who represented Rockaway, resigned from Congress in 2011 because of lewd behavior online. His comeback and attempt at running for mayor got derailed when other such episodes were revealed. And then he managed to find himself in the middle of last year’s presidential election when it was revealed his computer might have had classified information via his wife, Huma Abedin, an assistant to Hillary Clinton.

Civic leaders are hard at work drawing attention to the need for storm protection. Rockaway is not even close to being ready for another hundred year storm (which seem to happen every few years now). Please plan on going to the beach at Beach 129th on Saturday, October 28 to show solidarity for this most important cause.

We got a couple of messages about sand fleas and flying bugs ruining beach days last week. We’ve asked the fleas to stay away.

The Daily News reported that City Council will be holding a hearing on the high drop out rates in the Build It Back program. The same article said a study shows that the average cost of elevating a home jumped from $250,000 in original estimates to approximately $700,000. And the thing is, the original $250,000 figure was actually very high compared to other areas in the country, in which a house can be raised for between $30,000 and $100,000. Build It Back has been the nightmare that never ends.

A surfer, Michah Behrend, posted a Facebook photo of a huge gash on his ankle. He said

“Apparently there are indeed sharks at Rockaway Beach, N.Y.” Some people commented that it might have been a blue fish, others suggested he got caught up in the rock jetties. Behrend did not respond to inquiries by press time.
