Kudos to all who help in holiday beautifications efforts. Civic and merchant groups and lots of good-hearted people contribute to the holiday cheer. Thank you! We can’t get to all the events, but if you send us photos and some info, we’ll do our best to get them in The Rockaway Times.

The Sandpiper Playground, on Shorefront Parkway from Beach 105th to Beach 108th, that remains nowhere to be seen since Sandy, seems on its way to a new life. The City and Parks announced that bids are being accepted for construction/reconstruction of the playground. The cost estimate range is $3,000,000.00 to $10,000,000.00. Last week’s Daily News ran an old photo of frustrated Giant football fans in 1978.  Fans hung a banner: Rockaway New York Hates Mara – a not-so-nice note to Giant owner Wellington Mara.  Which reminded us…there is an app called Hater – which matches you with others who hate the same things. "Perhaps it is hatred that could unite us all" is the tag line of the company.  And why do we think this will be huge in Rockaway?

Some people are really good at planning, we guess. According to reports, the 2021 mayor’s race has already begun. Melinda Katz has formed a Katz 2021 campaign committee and Scott Stringer has submitted forms as well to the Board of Elections.

Speaking of politicians…Governor Cuomo, the guy who couldn’t wait to put the tolls back on the bridges after Sandy, is the same guy who disbanded the Moreland Commission of Public Corruption and he is the same guy now being investigated by the FBI for hiring employees to work in the governor’s office while paying them through other state agencies. Oh, and Politico recently reported that he held a “press conference” by phone, but first had staff calling reporters requesting they ask specific questions. And the charade was all the more ridiculous because he was physically in the Governor’s chambers making it unnecessary to do the conference by phone.  Unless he wanted to rig it.  And this guy is eyeing The White House?

If you’re reading this on Thursday, here’s a last minute reminder that the Rockaway Business Alliance is hosting a Holiday Marketplace at Bungalow Bar from 6 p.m. to 11 p.m. It’ll be a party atmosphere while you shop local vendors. There will be a cash bar, open dance floor, and music by DJ Mikey Palms. There will also be a 50/50 raffle, with all proceeds going to Puerto Rico Hurricane Relief.
