Hoop news.  Local product Charlie Marquardt has signed on with the Long Island Nets which is the NBA G League (minor league) affiliate of the Brooklyn Nets. Charlie played at St. Francis de Sales, then Poly Prep and four years at Molloy College where he averaged 22 points a game his senior year and was First Team All Conference. Charlie’s father (Charlie too), coach, and a pretty good hoopster himself must be thrilled.

Yes, there is a cell tower now stationed on the street on Mickey Carton Way (the street parallel to Rockaway Beach Boulevard between Beach 108th and 109th).  The old Snug Harbor Restaurant, then Dalton’s had a tall cell tower that was designed to resemble a flag pole (albeit a fat one). Some people never knew it was a cell tower.  When the property was bought and plans for a hotel got underway, the owners of the cell tower maintained rights through a lease agreement to keep the cell tower on the property.  So…the cell tower has been put on the street so construction can get underway, and is likely to be there for 16 months or so. Why so tall? It has to clear the building when completed – though the tower will be a good 50 feet above the planned 70-foot hotel. And yes, DOT and Buildings have given the green light on the unique placement.

Post Office gripes. Maybe it’s the time of year, but we hear the Rockaway Park Branch ran out of stamps (again) and not enough people were working the windows during the last week’s crush.  From our experience, the people who do work the windows are great.  The stamps thing seems to be out of their control.

The Marine Parkway Bridge closes overnight weeknights from MIDNIGHT til 5 a.m.  through December 22.  Lew Simon says he urged the MTA to change the closure from 11 p.m.  The extra hour helps people go to and fro in these busy holiday times.  The MTA has not announced plans beyond December 22. Since Lew knew about the change before the MTA ever posted it, we have to give credit where credit is due.  Nice work, Lew.

No comment.  Did you know the mayor was in Iowa on Tuesday?  He hasn’t been sworn in yet for a second term but he wants a national profile and maybe he’s preparing for a presidential run.

Thanks to Lisena Garden Center in Broad Channel for the beautiful tree on our front page, which RT Editor Katie McFadden decorated with shells from our very own beach.

Holiday gripe: gift certificates that expire.  You pay cash (since when does cash expire?) We say negotiate with the shop owner.  Ask for an expiration date of five years. It’s the same as cash! If someone redeems the certificate in five years they’ll presumably be able to buy less because of inflation thereby protecting the merchant. And c’mon, it’s easy money for the merchant – they know a lot of people will never redeem them (because they’ll be put away and forgotten about!)
