The shortest day, the day with less sunlight than any other is behind us. It may not seem like it but days are now getting longer, every minute of sunshine helps!

Happy Jack’s Burger Bar will be the name of the new place opening on Mickey Carton Way (the old Rockaway Beach Blvd between Beach 108th to 109th). Owner and chef Mike Dalton is aiming to have it opened by March 3 for Rockaway’s St. Patrick’s Parade Day. The place is named after his father.

Get the hot toddies and hot showers ready. The New Year’s Day Polar Plunges that occur traditionally every year will be a chilly challenge this time around. Forecasts call for a high of 21 degrees! We admire you all, you bunch of nuts!

News you couldn’t live without. Rockaway doesn’t have a museum (though you would think a place that was home to Nobel prize winners, professional athletes, the famous Playland amusement park, the longest urban beach and so on would have a museum. There was one once but it pretty much went the way of The Green Line bus). Anyway, you’ll be thrilled to know they’re opening a selfie museum in Los Angeles. Admission: $25.

Realty Check, a real estate feature, is a regular column in the New York Post.  The lead sentence in a recent column read: Realty Check’s favorite subway ride these days is the A line.  Our eyes popped out but alas, the writer was only referring to the stretch of line from Harlem to Wall Street. When someone calls the Rockaway end of the A a favorite, it will either be a joke or a really sad commentary on the rest of the subway system.

Ronan Tynan, the famous Irish tenor, was a big hit as he performed at St. Francis de Sales last week. Lucky audience members said a local talent, Joseph Murray, was equally amazing as he sang in between some of Tynan’s sets.
