Ok, winter’s on the homestretch and it’s not because any groundhogs say so.  We say so because The Rockaway Times Photo Contest is now on and because that makes us start planning our annual Summer Guide.   Can’t wait to see your best photos.  We will still run Local Color, our regular photo feature.  Those pics should be sent to Mail@RockawayTimes.  Photos for the contest should be sent to This email address is being protected from spambots. Well, those St. John’s basketball tickets we’ve given away for FREE sure became hot items recently as the team knocked off Duke and #1-ranked Villanova.

What were all those guys doing lining up at the McDonald’s drive-thru?  Only kidding, only kidding.  There was a report that a chemical used in McDonald’s french fries might cure baldness.  This stuff, dimethylpolysiloxane, is actually used in the frying oil.  Guys, before you change your diet (hey, chicken nuggets are cooked in the same oil!) please know dimethylpolysiloxane would be used as part of a process with human skin cells.  Eating your way to a full mane is still futuristic.

Why is this so complicated?  With reports that Russians will again make efforts to interfere with elections why not have electronic voting machines with paper back up?  Just like every ATM.  You vote, you get a receipt with your selections.  Looks good?  Drop it in a secure box.  Even if there’s no evidence of wrongdoing a basic audit can reveal the consistency between electronic and paper ballots.

Nana Fujimoto is the goalie on the Japanese women’s ice hockey team playing in the Olympics.  So what? You might be asking.  Well, Nana played on the Riveters at Aviator Sports at Floyd Bennett.  She was the first goalie to earn a win in the team’s history.   And to top it off, Nana lived in Rockaway.  Now you’ve got a rooting interest.
