LGBTQ group, Out Rockaway was awarded the 20th annual Carmel Tavadia Memorial Award this past Sunday, February 5, in recognition of their efforts to support Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Questioning (LGBTQ) family values at the annual Queens Chapter of Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays (PFLAG) Awards Reception and Luncheon in Astoria, Queens.
PFLAG Queens celebrated Out Rockaway's mission to create a safe community space for LGBTQ individuals throughout Rockaway, as well as their commitment to increase LGBTQ visibility through their participation in various events both on and off the peninsula. Members of Out Rockaway’s steering committee were well represented from Breezy Point to Far Rockaway.
Out Rockaway is open to all, and is dedicated to building a sense of community for the LGBTQ individuals who live in, work in and/or visit the Rockaways. Through cultural and social events and activities, Out Rockaway strives to enhance visibility and self-empowerment of the LGBTQ community while combating homophobia and isolation.
