Hit us with your best shots! The 2nd Annual Rockaway Times Photo Contest is here. We know Rockaway is full of some talented photographers from amateurs to professionals, and we want to see what you got! You could wind up with a $500 top prize.
Community activist and columnist, John Cori, helped spearhead last year’s contest. “My main goal was to get people exposure. We have great photographers and all of these local people who see the beauty and wonderful backdrop of the peninsula, and we wanted to get their photos out there, instead of on their phones or on Facebook,” Cori said.
Last year’s first photo contest was such a hit, that we want to do it again. The contest will be organized by John Cori with the help of The Rockaway Times and the Department of Parks and Recreation. We received hundreds of entries, which were narrowed down through different rounds of judging. Once we had a top 30, the final photos were displayed on the boardwalk in Rockaway Beach and were open to a public vote. Three judges then had the tough job of deciding the winner out of the top three. A pooch named Walter was top dog. Michael Rudin’s photo of his dog, Walter, pictured wearing a cape on the snow-covered beach in the middle of winter, won the grand prize of $500, plus a front-page feature on the The Rockaway Times.
This time we’re going bigger and better. Liam Kavanagh, First Deputy Commissioner for the Parks Department, was so impressed with the boardwalk displays put up by Cori, that he suggested going bigger and better for the next one. With the help of Cori and the Parks Department, that will be a reality this year. Last year’s photos were blown up to 11 x 14 size and posted near the Beach 97th Concession. This year, they’ll be blown up to poster size and will be displayed all along the boardwalk, from Beach 17th to Beach 126th Street. Details on judging and voting will be announced at a later time. The top winner will once again receive a $500 prize and will be featured on the cover of the newspaper.
Note that any photo submitted will be used any way The Rockaway Times sees fit, including in The Rockaway Times Summer Guide. Photo credit will be given. Photos that are submitted to Local Color can also be submitted into the contest.BLOG COMMENTS POWERED BY DISQUS
