NFL Star Sets Rescued Rockaway Seal Free

A Rockaway native was sent off with Flowers. According to the Providence Journal, New England Patriots defensive end Trey Flowers paid a visit to a Rhode Island beach to say goodbye to a seal that was named after him, as he made his way back to the sea. The 9-month-old harbor seal, Trey, was found in Rockaway in December. He was malnourished, weighing at just 30 pounds, and suffering from wounds to his flippers, neck and belly. Trey was rescued by the Riverhead Foundation for Marine Research & Preservation and then taken to Mystic Aquarium’s animal rescue clinic.

The aquarium had named the seal Trey after Flowers, who helped lead the New England Patriots to victory over the Atlanta Falcons in Super Bowl LI. Trey was rehabilitated and increased his weight to 48 pounds. On Tuesday, February 28, Trey was released back into the wild from Blue Shutters Town Beach with the help of Flowers himself.
