Mariners and Red Storm Continue to Sail After “Opening Day”

Rockaway Little League enjoyed another fun-filled "Opening Day" celebration while the Pico Mariners (Pee Wee Seniors) and the Bartoli Chiropractic Red Storm (Minor Girls) continued to enjoy early season success.

After Mother Nature dropped a deluge of rain, thunder and lightning before sunrise last Saturday, the weather dried up just in time for RLL’s annual gala. The parade, led by bagpiper John McManus, marched past the puddles and onto the field of dreams. After Kelsie Pye and Taylor Mahoney led the audience in our National Anthem, opening remarks were delivered by City Comptroller Scott Stringer, State Senator Joseph Addabbo and Assemblywoman Stacey Pheffer-Amato. That trio also threw ceremonial first pitches before the first game for our Challenger division. The Challenger game also featured pitching by former major leaguer John Halama, who came on in relief of beleaguered starter (and master batting coach) Randy Koenig. As always, it was a joyful event. John Duggan and his crew managed to dry the fields enough to get in a few regular-season games as well.

The first place Pico Mariners defeated the Belle Harbor Yacht Club A’s 15-3.  It was a team effort with Matt McKnight leading the offense with three doubles and a triple. Strong pitching by Isahia Tawil and Jon Pesso and solid defense by Michael Haley and Justin Williams kept the A’s in check.

The undefeated Bartoli Chiropractic Red Storm (5-0) had a solid 7-2 win over the Beach Bagels Wildcats on Sunday. Amazing hitting by Carly Intrabartolo and Nora Tubridy led the way along with some great defensive plays by Shea McKeefrey at third-base and Mary Doyle at first. Maeve Grace continued her good defensive plays along with Riley Mills and Falynne Parchment. Carly Intrabartolo stole a bullet hit by Noelle McElhinny of the Wildcats, with runners in scoring position at second and third. A great game was played by all the Red Storm girls.

Also on Sunday, the L. Mahoney Real Estate Royals (Minor Boys) saw their spirited six-run rally in the top of the 6th fall short as they lost to the Stop & Shop Mariners, 14-9. The two Connors, McElhinney (single, home run) and Monahan (single, double, 2 RBI), each rapped out two hits, as did Jonathan Lazo (single, double).  Joseph Esposito (triple) and Dean Esposito (double) added extra base hits. Mr. OBP, Matthew Schneider, drew two more free passes and leads the team with 10 walks for the season.  He also had a stellar game at the hot corner. Ben Gressel and Ryan Wiley swiped two bases each. Owen Maloney made great defensive plays in right field.
