The scholars of Wave Preparatory Academy-PS 362 in Far Rockaway know the importance of giving back. That’s why they make it their mission to practice community service each month.
The Wave Prep students have been very busy over the past few months. The school’s name stands for Worldy, Accountable, Virtuous, Excellent (WAVE), and they practice some of these goals through charity. Since the school year started, the students and their family collect certain items and donate them to those in need. Each month comes with a specific mission. In September/October, the children collected and donated treats for children with cancer at Memorial Sloan Kettering. In November, they made “boxes of love” for active military members. In December, they gave hats to the homeless for Bowery Mission. In January/February, collected more than 500 pounds of soup for City Harvest. In March/April, they donated new baby items to the newborns at St. John’s Episcopal Hospital. Over the past month, the school has been collecting pennies. They’ve raised more than $2,800 so far, which will be donated to the Leukemia Lymphoma Society.
Some of the students that make donations have an opportunity to hand-deliver the goodies on a field trip. Each child is given a raffle ticket for every item they donate. The tickets are put in a class raffle and one student from each class is picked to attend the field trip. Scholars have been given tours, listened to lectures, taught some history, and have even been supplied a lunch from Memorial Sloan Kettering, The Bowery Mission in Manhattan, and St. Johns Episcopal Hospital.
Keep up the great work, kids!BLOG COMMENTS POWERED BY DISQUS
