Concessions Open Friday

Summer is starting a little early. The weather is finally starting to warm up and the boardwalk concessions are opening on Friday, a week ahead of Memorial Day Weekend.

The concessions are back, and opening weekend will be full of new and old treats and plenty of live music and fun. At the Beach 106th Concession, Caracas and Brothers are back in action. Brothers will be serving up some healthy breakfast options starting at 7:30 a.m. on Friday and you can get your arepas and sangria at Caracas starting at 11 a.m. If you head there for some after-work fun, Big Squid will be performing starting at 6 p.m. for the kickoff party.

Head on down to Beach 97th, the largest concession of the bunch, to check out some of the new and old vendors. Returning to Beach 97th are Low Tide Bar, Breezy BBQ, Uma's, Lobster Joint, City Sticks, La Cevicheria, Bolivian Llama Party and La Fruiteria. Rockaway Rar Bar will also host some seafood events throughout the summer. New this year is Peaches Picnic, featuring picnic-style fare with locally-sourced fruits and vegetables, plus grab and go snacks. Newcomer Super Burrito featuring Northern Carolina-style burritos will also make its debut. Starting at 4 p.m., the party will get started with a DJ set by New Guy, live music by the Wild Yaks and a post-show dance party featuring Brother Nature and Baby Love.

Down on Beach 86th Street, Rippers will once again be serving up burgers, hotdogs, drinks and more starting Friday. On Beach 17th Street, DredSurfer Grill remains open year-round, but their big kickoff events will be on Memorial Day. On Monday, May 29, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., there will be a salsa on the beach party with performances by Ed Martinez, Chico Alvarez and his Conjunto Sabor Quintet. At 5 p.m., the Red Hot Radio party starts with DJ Steve Austin and DJ Elly.

Parts of Riis Park Beach Bazaar (RPBB) remain open all year-round, with chef Whitney Aycock holding down the fort over the winter. Whit’s End has closed for the season, but Aycock is still serving up pizzas. Many favorites will be coming back to join Whit come Memorial Day weekend. Fletcher's BBQ, Ed & Bev's, Oaxaca Tacos, Coney Shack and Ample Hills Creamery are all returning. Local businesses like By The Beach Cocos, Eat MUD (formerly Paleo Factory), Cuisine by Claudette and Boarders Surf Shop will also be back. Some new vendors will also be joining the lineup, including Rockaway Clam Shack, Chick'n'Cone and Sausage Hero.

Besides food, there will be plenty of fun at RPBB this summer, from Memorial Day to Labor Day. There will be free live music every Friday, Saturday, Sunday and holiday. They will be there for Rockaway Beach Volleyball, which starts on Wednesday, May 24. Every Tuesday there will be Killer Karaoke with DJ Nicky B, the only oceanfront karaoke in New York City. RPBB  will also host National Parks Service Campfire Thursdays. They will also have beach chairs and umbrellas for rent. For their full lineup of music and other events, check out

The beach will officially be open and guarded starting Saturday, May 27. There will be an opening ceremony with NYC Parks Commissioner Mitchell J. Silver, at 10 a.m. at the Beach 94th Street Plaza.
