Spring has arrived and we will begin to have lots of positive energy from the sun, flowers, exercise, people we meet, etc. This week I would like to discuss energy. There is positive vs. negative, low vs. high, spiritual vs. non-spiritual.  Energy can be healing and uplifting.  We all have an energy field. In physics, energy is defined as the property of objects, which can be transferred to other objects or converted into different forms. The energy we are familiar with can be described as the strength and vitality required for sustained physical or mental activity. Energy can be healing and spiritual. I choose the healing and spiritual energy because it can easily be felt in my body and mind. It is real and so very powerful.

Recently, I was taking a yoga class with Denise Lee and she quoted, “Breath is Spirit.”  There is a special energy when working with the breath. You feel it, you sit with it, you become one with the breath. Imagine sitting with your breath and following it within your body and mind. There may be this feeling of spirit flowing with ease. Even if you are having difficulty breathing, you can use visualization to help you breathe better. Breath work creates positive energy and is liberating. Breathing is the ignition key to your movement. When you incorporate breath with movement, you are again creating magical energy. There is a positive energy field you put out to the universe.

Teaching yoga in a room full of students who are connecting to their breath creates a special energy. Last week one of my students said to me, “There is a special energy at Ocean Bliss Yoga.” Yes, there really is a great energy and I believe it stems from being authentic and human.  If you are in an environment where people are honest and happy, you will feel a wonderful energy that is both healing and uplifting. We don’t try to make energy, we just allow ourselves to be real and connected. Energy is positive in a stress-free room.

There may be times in your life when energy is low. Mentally or physically if there is a lack of energy it can be debilitating. Sometimes it can be caused by medicine, other times it can be hormonal imbalances or perhaps a loss in your life. Sometimes we will suffer but there is help out there. Whether you seek advice from a medical doctor, therapist, yoga therapist, or friend, reach out to someone and don’t be afraid or anxious about your situation. We have all been through tough times and there is always support. Energy can be contagious. Breath is energy, spirit is energy and we are energy.

In closing, here is a quote from Marianne Williamson I love: "We have great power to affect the attitudes and behavior of the people around us, at work and at home. We have the power to set a tone of honor, and to create an energy around ourselves that says, ‘I respect myself. I respect you. Let's respect each other.’"
