Strength in Numbers at the Walk for the Shore II Rally

“What do we want? Groins! When do we want them? Now!” That was just one of many chants heard along the beach on Sunday, June 25, when hundreds gathered at Beach 87th and Beach 140th Streets to demand immediate action from the Army Corps of Engineers regarding beach protection.

John Cori and Eddy Pastore of Friends of Rockaway Beach organized the successful event after clear evidence had shown that our beaches, specifically those without jetties, or groins, are getting smaller and smaller, and nearly five years since Hurricane Sandy, the beaches are still not well protected. There was a strong showing from local residents at both rally locations, with some even making the walk from Beach 87th to Beach 140th. Councilman Eric Ulrich was on hand to show his support and speak to his constituents.

Organizers hope that the rally will send a clear message to the Army Corps of Engineers and that the time for studies is over and action is overdue.
