It was a splash that made a splash. Jennifer Keim’s beautiful photo of a wave splashing a bulkhead, with a sunset and the Breezy Point Lighthouse in the background, captured the kind of magic that was too irresistible for judges not to award Jennifer the grand prize of $500, in the second annual Rockaway Times Photo Contest.
The final round of judging was held at Caracas on the boardwalk and Beach 106th Street on Sunday, July 2. Fifteen photos made it to this last day of judging and all poster-sized pics were displayed on the concession’s picnic tables.
After judges gave all a close look, Jennifer’s photo, along with Joe Seminara’s photo of his daughter on a surfboard and Greg DeBoer’s sunlit surfer (both photos can be seen on Page 12), made it to the final three and then judges had the tough choice of selecting a winner.
Joe Seminara’s photo (also seen on the cover of The Rockaway Times’s Summer Guide) earned top runner-up and with the honor came two dinner cruise tickets courtesy of Hornblower, the NYC Ferry operator. Greg DeBoer took third prize and a free 30-day ferry pass.
The contest drew more than 1,000 photos and 30 of the best were made into durable posters and affixed to the boardwalk for beachgoers to admire. The Rockaway Times got generous help from the NYC Parks Department, the Jamaica Bay-Rockaway Parks Conservancy, the Rockaway Artists Alliance, and Hornblower/NYCFerry, and it couldn’t have happened without John Cori, who organized the whole thing.
Congratulations to Jennifer and thanks to all who submitted photos and supported this fantastic event!BLOG COMMENTS POWERED BY DISQUS
