On Wednesday, August 16, a massive boat pulled in to the Beach 108th ferry dock, which raised some questions of whether or not Rockaway was finally getting a bigger boat. Ferry operator Hornblower initially said they just got the 800-passenger boat and were testing it on ocean waters, but later shot down hopes of it becoming permanent. An official from Hornblower later said the boat would not be used on Rockaway trips or as part of the NYC Ferry service at all.
“It’s not a vessel that was designed to service NYC Ferry, and at the moment we don’t believe it can be effectively used on NYC Ferry routes. But as you know, we are continuing to use a number of other large capacity vessels to service NYC Ferry routes during times of high demand,” the official said.
