With the football season coming to a grinding halt, and our beloved St. Patrick’s Month still three weeks away, it's time to gather our best aquatic formal wear and dancing shoes, and strut on over to Poseidon’s Prom! Poseidon’s Prom is the annual fundraiser for Rockaway’s new favorite end of summer tradition: The Poseidon’s Parade.

This year’s prom will take place, as always, at the Knights of Columbus (333 Beach 90th) this Saturday, February 10 at 7:30 pm.  The yearly fiasco is an explosion of art, music, dance, and raffle prize insanity. Like any other prom, the event reaches its climax with the crowning of the prom king and queen, who get to lead next year’s parade! This regal reward traditionally has members of the Rockaway Mermaid Brigade bring their “A-game” to the big dance.

In order to have a big dance, a party needs some big acts. The music will be provided by a legendary combination of Indaculture and DJ Paddy Tubz! This will be Indaculture’s first gig of 2018, and will include the full lineup. DJ Paddy Tubz, who is rocking his third prom, will be coming off a big performance in, “Bold Dramedy,” this Thursday, February 8 at the Davenport Theater. I asked Chris Rudolph of Indaculture about the lineup. He stated, “Whenever Indaculture and Paddy get together, things get weird. And we all know that, according to Dr. Gonzo, “when the going gets weird, the weird turn pro.”

Speaking of professional weirdos, Rockaway’s most zany and talented artists will have their art on display and for sale. John Cori, Kayla Curran, Morgan Kopecky, Rebecca Rembert, Kiyan Hagan, Marybeth Galvin, Casey Butler, and Geoff Rawling will all have visual art featured at the prom. Geoff Rawling, Captain of the Rockaway Mermaid Brigade also created this year’s official poster. I called him to ask about the posters: “The design is in black and white and features Miss Columbia. It can be found at businesses all over The Rock paired with crayons. Use the crayons and color them in. It’s not rocket science!” he muttered before hanging up.

Many businesses “all over the Rock” have contributed to make this event, and the parade in general, a huge success. I checked in with the team’s internet guru Alex Cannon. She proudly read the list of sponsors that will be offering prizes for the much anticipated Chinese Auction: “Crom Physical Fitness, Pico RBNY, Bungalow Bar, Whit’s End, JKS Printing, Betsy’s Bungalow, Ocean Bliss Yoga, Glorified Tomato, Brooklyn Roasting Company, Rochelle’s Face Painting, Fat Cardinal Provisions, St. James and Boarders Surfshop, Rockaway Theatre Company, Rekindling Wellness Spa, Woke Lashes, Healy’s, Hawk Eye Productions, and End of the A!”

I met with Casey Butler, the tyrannical queen of Poseidon’s Parade Inc. at her home. Amid the many boxes of prizes, art and decorations, she said, “I would like to thank all of the sponsors, artists, helpers, participants, and especially The Knights for graciously hosting us once more!”

Tickets can be purchased at http://www.poseidonsparade.com/. Tickets can also be purchased at the door for $40 and include open bar and appetizers from 7:30 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. There will also be a 50/50. Dress to impress!
