Since 1992, the St Francis de Sales Quilters have been making crib quilts for sick babies. They started the effort as part of At-Risk Babies & Children’s Quilts (ABC), a nationwide group that made quilts for babies with AIDS. When that epidemic ebbed in America, the quilters in Rockaway continued on their own, creating handmade quilts for mothers in need via the Sisters of Life. They also donated to Ronald McDonald House.
The annual Quilters Mass at St Francis will be on Sunday, October 4 at 10 a.m. After mass, there will be a display of quilts in Monsignor Reddy Hall (the SFDS “small hall”). Some quilts will be available for purchase. The proceeds will go for supplies, batting and material.
The SFDS Quilters include Carol Sullivan, Carol Chimera, Marguarite Kazalski, Terry Curley, Gloria Saphia, Kathy Clark, Kathleen Walsh, Karen Mahoney and Maureen Walsh. New members are welcome. The Quilters meet on Wednesdays from 10 a.m. to noon in JASA at 106-20 Shore Front Parkway.
