***** Happy Thanksgiving. We are grateful for having loyal readers and simply awesome customers who have been so supportive this year (and every year!). We wish you all a Happy Thanksgiving. ***** Don’t expect any final call on the NYS Assembly race between Stacey Pheffer Amato and Tom Sullivan this week. Ballots are still being counted and with this being a holiday week we expect no news on that front. The Queens Chronicle reported that just seven (7!) votes separate the two. Being so close, and with a lawsuit filed by Amato’s team, a recount is also expected. Let’s hope it’s sorted out soon,...

***** Happy Veteran’s Day, which is celebrated tomorrow, Friday, November 11.  For those who’ve served, thank you for your service and sacrifices. (It cannot be overstated how important veterans are to this country and our way of life). ***** Saturday, November 12 is the 21st anniversary of the crash of Flight 587 in Belle Harbor. It was a terrible and terrifying event that occurred as the community was dealing with the aftermath of 9/11. Two hundred and sixty people aboard the flight were killed and five Rockaway residents were killed in their homes. We hope the best for families and friends...

***** This coming Tuesday, November 8 is Election Day. Local races of interest include: For Congress, challenger Paul King takes on incumbent Gregory Meeks; and for New York State Assembly, Stacey Pheffer Amato looks to retain her office against Tom Sullivan. ***** There are also four ballot proposals which include boosting spending on environmental projects, including a Statement of Values for City Government in the preamble to the city charter, establishing a new Office of Racial Equity, and a proposal that would mandate that the city government use a new method to calculate the “true cost...

***** Happy and safe Halloween. There are some fabulous Halloween decorations on houses throughout Rockaway. Here’s to a spooktakular Halloween weekend. Oh, if you want to get wet, Locals Surf School is holding a Totally Ghoul Surf Competition on Sunday. All levels welcome for the contest or just come cheer from the shore, starts at 11 a.m. on Beach 67th. See more Halloween events on Page 51. ***** As you can see, we have devoted much of this week’s paper to Hurricane Sandy which devastated Rockaway (and beyond) ten years ago this Saturday, October 29. While recovery has been impressive and...

***** L’Shana Tovah tikatevu. Rosh Hashanah begins on the evening of Sunday, September 25 and ends on the evening of Tuesday, September 27. Again, Happy New Year to our friends who celebrate. ***** We couldn’t agree more with the idea that Peter Brady suggested recently. The Flight 587 memorial on Beach 116th Street should be redesigned. As it is, there is no access from the boardwalk (you have to leave the boardwalk, go down a ramp and circle back to enter the memorial). On the street side, the structure has a wall that is hardly welcoming. The wall provides privacy for those who might...
