***** L’Shana Tovah tikatevu. Rosh Hashanah begins on the evening of Sunday, September 25 and ends on the evening of Tuesday, September 27. Again, Happy New Year to our friends who celebrate. ***** We couldn’t agree more with the idea that Peter Brady suggested recently. The Flight 587 memorial on Beach 116th Street should be redesigned. As it is, there is no access from the boardwalk (you have to leave the boardwalk, go down a ramp and circle back to enter the memorial). On the street side, the structure has a wall that is hardly welcoming. The wall provides privacy for those who might...

***** Ahoy! Fun weekend ahead. The Poseidon Parade is Saturday (see you on the boardwalk!) and The Richie Allen Surf Classic is Sunday (see you on the beach!). ***** The alarm went off a little early on Tuesday morning. If you have a cell phone and don’t turn it off overnight, chances are you got a tornado alert sometime around 4:40 a.m. The National Weather Service issued the warning which included the advice to move to a basement or lower floor. The twister was allegedly heading towards Rockaway. A meteorologist tweeted “if you hear a train like noise, seek shelter in the most interior room...

***** This Sunday is September 11, the twenty-first anniversary of the attack on America. There will be memorial ceremonies at Tribute Park (Beach 116th Street and the bay) at 8:30 a.m.  We remember those who were killed that day and we’d like to thank those who make the effort to organize and plan formal memorials year after year. ***** It was sort of a news event that it rained all day this past Tuesday. We’d forgotten what a complete rainy day looked like. But enough of that. Now we’re ready for an Indian summer for the rest of September. ***** NYC DOT announced that it will begin a complete...

***** Happy Labor Day. We extend our thanks to those who work hard and make life better for so many. ***** Although Labor day is the unofficial end to the summer season, beaches are open with lifeguards through Sunday, September 11. But Mardi Gras is this weekend! See Page 42 for events. ***** Well, it was only a matter of time. On Monday, a motorcycle passenger was killed after being ejected from the motorcycle after a collision with a man on rollerblades. Where did this happen? On the boardwalk! This happened in the middle of the afternoon at Beach 49th Street.  Motorcycles have been speeding...

***** The annual 3 on 3 By the Sea Basketball Tourney in honor of Clare Droesch is tomorrow, Friday, at the St. Francis de Sales schoolyard. ***** The Richie Allen Memorial Surf Classic is Sunday, September 18. ***** Which is part of a big weekend for Rockaway. The Rockaway Film Festival kicks off Saturday, September 17 (keep an eye out for lots more info in The Rockaway Times) and the Poseidon Parade is that Saturday as well. You can watch a parade, then a movie, wake up the next day, and watch some surfing. Or join in the parade or the surf classic. ***** The National Highway Traffic Safety...

***** If at first you don’t succeed try, try again. And then try 29 more times.  That’s what the Beach House volleyball team did as the team finally captured a championship at the Rockaway Beach Volleyball Finals held last Saturday, August 13. The team had been competing for 32 years but came up short the first 31 times. Bob Fash and Dicky Ferrin were there for the whole drought. Now, the question is, can they repeat next year?! ***** Congratulations to all the volleyball champs and to the league organizers who make this humongous event such a fantastic Rockaway tradition. ***** And it’s a week...

***** Tomorrow, Friday August 12, we’re naming the Winner of The Rockaway Times Photo Contest.  We’ve invited all photographers who earned a spot in the Top 30. They’ll be able to take home the enlarged photo that was on display in the boardwalk since Memorial Day (and maybe get a Rockaway Times t-shirt). The winner will receive $500 as the Grand Prize and earn bragging rights for at least a year. The public is invited to the final ceremony, too.  The Rockaway Times office, 114-04 Beach Channel Drive at 5 p.m. on Friday. ***** Speaking of contests, our Rockaway Times Sandcastle Contest is this...

***** We’ve now got a Top 10 in The Rockaway Times Photo Contest. A total of nine judges (from the Rockaway Times, NYC Ferry, NYC Parks, and Jamaica Bay – Rockway Parks Conservancy) had an excruciating time narrowing down from the Top 30 photos which are on display on the boardwalk. Congratulations to the Top 10 – all of whom will be eligible to win the top prize of $500. The final is scheduled from Friday, August 12. See the Top 10 on Pages 13 and 14. ***** And we’re already planning next year’s contest. We are half-thinking of spotlighting “people” in Rockaway. Now’s a good time of year to...

***** The Resilient Edgemere Plan was approved last week by the City Council. The plan, first pushed by the de Blasio administration, could add 1,200 new housing units and improve resilience in the area that has been plagued by floods for years. Community Board 14 Manager Jon Gaska heaped praise on City Councilwoman Selvena Brooks-Powers who negotiated with the city on housing and infrastructure. ***** Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Well, we’d like to hear who has eyes that say the new buildings in Far Rockaway are beauties. Calling Donovan Richards and others responsible for the dark,...
